Showing Miniature Horses

Because of the infighting about conformation standards among those showing miniature horses in the USA, a host of different registries have appeared, offering many opportunities for showing miniature horses.

Unlike many large horse breeds with well-defined conformation standards, showing a miniature horse can be a hit-or-miss affair.

  • Height - The Height of a miniature horse is important because showing a miniature horse is highly dependent upon the differing height requirements between registries.

  • Conformation - There is no universally accepted breed or conformation standard for midget ponies, pygmy horses or miniature horses.  This can make showing a miniature horse challenging.

  • Performance - Showing a miniature horse in a performance class might involve running beside the horse while it jumps small obstacles or driving it in a cart.

Consequently, those who are considering  showing a miniature horse might choose a favorite registry first and then buy a miniature horse likely to win, based on that registries perception of "ideal" miniature horse conformation and height.

Independent miniature horse clubs association and registries have evolved on every continent (click here for the list), each with their own showing rules, conformation standards and size requirements, ranging from 28 inches to 38 inches tall.
