Mortality of breeding miniature horses in the USA Evidence suggests that USA miniature horse breeders experience much higher rates of foaling death than the large horse breeds.
It appears that some foreign pony breeding programs do not have the same problems as USA breeders. Many of the smaller miniature ponies in the UK (Dartmoor National Park) are well-within the height requirements of the USA Miniature Horse Registries such as the American Miniature Horse Registry. The role of Miniature Horse prenatal and foaling care Many vets agree that the death rate of miniature horse foaling can be greatly reduced (from over 36% to less than 10%) by providing the miniature horse with an opportunity to have life-saving medical attention in an equine hospital.
Vet's say that proper medical intervention can reduce mare and foal mortality to less than 10%.
