Equine Anterior Segment Dysgenesis

Anterior Segment Dysgenesis or ASD, is a vision threatening disease with a strong genetic component.

According to the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine, in is strongly-related to the color of the miniature horse, especially chocolate-colored miniature horses:

"It has become apparent to veterinarians who work with chocolate colored horses that ocular defects occur in this coat color at a rate much greater than that seen in other coat colors."

The "chocolate" color in miniature horses may be described as dark-chocolate silver dapple (not to be confused with  Caramel Dapple), the light-chocolate silver dapple or chocolate pinto.
